Background of the Study
Benue State is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, where traditional practices have long been central to community health and environmental management. With the intensification of climate change, communities in Benue State are increasingly facing climate-related health risks, such as waterborne and vector-borne diseases, exacerbated by extreme weather events. In response, many local communities have turned to traditional practices, including indigenous medicinal knowledge, community-based resource management, and ritualistic methods, to mitigate these risks (Eze, 2023).

Traditional practices in Benue State offer a holistic approach to health that integrates physical, spiritual, and environmental well-being. Indigenous knowledge, passed down through generations, encompasses sustainable land management, local weather prediction, and the use of medicinal plants to combat climate-induced ailments. These practices provide culturally embedded solutions that are cost-effective and accessible, particularly in areas where modern healthcare services are limited (Okoro, 2024).

Despite the widespread use of traditional methods, there is limited empirical research evaluating their effectiveness in mitigating climate-related health risks. This study seeks to bridge this gap by exploring how traditional practices contribute to community resilience in Benue State. By combining qualitative insights from local practitioners with quantitative health outcome data, the research will assess the role these practices play in reducing incidences of climate-induced diseases. The findings are expected to offer valuable perspectives for policymakers and health practitioners interested in integrating indigenous knowledge into broader climate adaptation and public health strategies (Ibrahim, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Although traditional practices have historically played a significant role in mitigating health risks, their potential remains underexplored in the context of contemporary climate change in Benue State. Modern healthcare systems and technological interventions have overshadowed indigenous methods, leading to an underutilization of traditional knowledge in addressing climate-related health challenges. This disconnect is problematic because local communities, who continue to rely on these practices, may not receive the full benefits of integrative health strategies (Nwankwo, 2023).

The lack of systematic documentation and analysis of traditional practices means that their effectiveness in mitigating climate-induced health risks is not fully understood. Consequently, indigenous methods are rarely incorporated into formal public health policies, which limits the development of comprehensive, culturally sensitive adaptation strategies. Without recognizing and integrating traditional knowledge, efforts to address climate-related health risks may be less effective, leaving communities vulnerable to adverse outcomes (Chukwu, 2024).

This study aims to evaluate the role of traditional practices in mitigating climate-related health risks in Benue State. It will examine how indigenous knowledge is applied in local health management, assess its effectiveness in reducing disease incidence, and identify factors that facilitate or hinder its adoption. Addressing this gap is critical for ensuring that climate adaptation strategies are both effective and culturally appropriate.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To document traditional practices used to mitigate climate-related health risks in Benue State.
  2. To assess the effectiveness of these practices in reducing the incidence of climate-induced health issues.
  3. To propose strategies for integrating traditional practices into formal health and climate adaptation policies.

Research Questions

  1. What traditional practices are employed in Benue State to address climate-related health risks?
  2. How effective are these practices in mitigating adverse health outcomes?
  3. What measures can facilitate the integration of traditional practices with modern health strategies?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Communities that actively use traditional practices experience lower incidences of climate-related health issues.
  2. There is a significant positive relationship between the use of indigenous knowledge and improved public health outcomes.
  3. Integrating traditional practices into formal policies will enhance community resilience.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on rural and semi-urban communities in Benue State. Data will be collected via interviews, focus groups, and analysis of health records. Limitations include potential biases in self-reporting and difficulties in quantifying traditional practices.

Definitions of Terms

  • Traditional Practices: Indigenous methods and rituals developed over generations for health and environmental management.
  • Climate-Related Health Risks: Health challenges directly or indirectly resulting from climate change.
  • Indigenous Knowledge: Local, culturally specific practices and insights used to manage environmental and health challenges.
